Spanning several decades and set in three continents, this novel is about story telling, reality is of secondary importance. From the description of the childhood of the main characters in Pakistan to the adventures of a seemingly successful US diplomat, everything in the book is just an excuse for Rushdie’s elegant, embracing prose. I guess some people would call it magic realism, but it is in essence the ability to tell a seductive story. There are political elements, some of them very topical such as islamic terrorism or the conflict between India and Pakistan, but they are just background information. What is very powerful is Rushdie’s ability to move across continents and seemingly different cultures and still keep the narrative alive without the plot becoming too “unreal”.
